the team was based around the world, and i had no authority over them outside the project. it was too late to start briefing anyone else. i tried desperately to salvage the plan and took on more and more tasks myself to ensure they would be completed. eventually, my frustration peaked, and i realized i could continue to be stressed by pursuing a plan that did not work, or i could try another way. i talked to my leader and created a different plan. as i relaxed and got to know my team members better, i began to enjoy the project, and we made good progress. reflecting on this process, i see that my feelings of insecurity and being overwhelmed led to unnecessarily controlling behaviour. i thought if i could control the variables, i could create the outcome i wanted. this created even more stress, which led to more controlling behaviour. in the moment, i was not aware of what was happening. it was my unconscious, gut response to my feelings. going forward, i want to change and have a conscious, healthy response. what are some things i could do differently next time? spend time in prayer and reflection to be aware of my emotions (before stress sets in!) go for a walk, take a break, or do something else productive to deal with my frustrations be honest with my team (as appropriate) and adapt together to the reality talk with my leader sooner about necessary changes seek god’s perspective and truth doing these things may not change the circumstances, but they would change my reactions. since most things are outside of our control, the best solution to avoiding stress is changing the way we respond. are you with me?
